What is it about road trips that make so many travelers chomp at the bit? These trips in little more than a small car, often involve cramped living quarters, long hours on the road and truck stop food. Yet from college students to baby boomers, there’s something about the adventure and thrill that draw us into them. Many have even taken road trips to the next level by making them longer than just your typical weekend or week-long road trip. There’s Alex and Luke, who are doing a road trip through every state and province in the U.S. and Canada. Karen Catchpole and Eric Mohl are doing a five-year road trip through North and South America. This Monday, October 4th, I embark on my own road trip; a six-day, 2,000+ mile trip from Buffalo, New York to Phoenix, Arizona.
Beginning Monday morning, the trip will be with travel photographer and writer Kirsten Alana. This isn’t your stereotypical road trip, which involves some sleeping bags, possibly a tent and frequent stops at rest areas to catch some sleep. The trip is sponsored by Select Registry Distinguished Inns of America. Select Registry is an association of inns that includes only top-notch inns in North America, as each inn has undergone a quality assurance inspection. As such, Select Registry inns maintain a high quality of service and hospitality. During our trip, we’ll be staying at a different Select Registry Inn each night until we reach Phoenix.
Throughout the trip, Kirsten and I will be tweeting and posting photos and information from the road. I’ll be writing up brief posts every evening of our trip and at the conclusion of the trip will be writing a feature on each of the Select Registry inns we stay at. You can keep up with us via Twitter by following the hashtag #srtrip. You can see our full itinerary below and the inns we’ll be visiting.

Love road trips. Tentatively planning one for the week before TBEX from either NYC to Vancouver or just Portland, Seattle and Vancouver. Interesting city choices. Safe travels!
Sounds awesome (though you could have been a bit more creative with the hashtag).
Have you got an itinerary yet?
Stoked for both of you. This should be a great trip. Looking forward to reading all about it …
Now that I’m on this side of it … the finish line side … with the backaches to prove it: I’m amazed we did it. It was SO MUCH. So much good!! Thanks to Select Registry for the great stays at their fabulous Inns! And thank you for being such a great navigator & mix master Spence!
Enjoyed reading your tweets about the trip.
I grew up with a love of being on the road. With my parents, I criss-crossed the U.S., Canada and a bit of Mexico. I’ve never lost my enthusiasm road trips, long distance or close to home. Spencer, I know what you mean about “All these towns we come to, I just want to find people and sit down w/ them to ask them what their story is”. I feel the same way!
